How to simply and effectively learn how to use Game Maker

Introduction

So many people start making games that they know they can make. Unfortunately, you can't just jump to a 3d mmorpg (which everyone wants to make) before you can even make a 3d game in the first place, and before you get to there you must make plenty of 2d games. I know, I know, you've heard this too many times, but it's the truth. Take this from a guy who started making an rpg before he even made a first game, and therefore didn't even get two sprites done :P.

Time to Begin

Game Maker is not an easy thing to learn. Here are some tips on how to start:

-Read the Game Maker manual and see what it has to say about Drag and Drop functions. The only downside to this is the fact that the manual is a little hard-to-understand at times.

-After you have completely read the manual, read the tutorials on www.yoyogames.com. This is something that people need to do more often.

-Don't forget to ask questions on www.gmc.yoyogames.com. But we will get to this later.

-After making games with Drag and Drop coding, it is time to start learning GML. You can do this by going to www.blackratstudios.com and downloading the tutorial that shows how to do Drag and Drop functions in GML. It is a very useful guide.

Now that you know GML...

Once you learn GML, you still have a long way to go before making an mmorpg. Here is how to continue learning GML:

-Read the manual. Once you understand GML, it's not as hard to understand the manual.

-Read tutorials and look at examples. This is a very effective way to learn how to do a number of different things.

-If you see something in a tutorial, example (or the manual for that matter) that doesn't make sense, ask a question about it on www.gmc.yoyogames.com.

How to effectively ask questions

-Make sure your spelling and grammar is good. Otherwise, people will think you're too nooby to learn what you are asking (it's sort of a label: noobs have bad grammar).

-Make sure that you can learn what you are trying to learn.

-Ask the question in an easy-to-understand way. And instead of saying 'How do I give my guy a sword' be more specific and say: 'How do I make a sword-slashing system?'

-Don't ask people to make games for you. And if your game has any error, be sure to post it along with your question.

Have a fun time making games!
